Service Requirements (formerly Service Stipulation):

NIH offers five extramural LRPs (where research is done outside of NIH at any non-profit institution); each requires a two-year commitment to conduct at least part-time research (minimum 20 hours per week average) in one of the following areas:
Clinical Research,
Pediatrics Research,
Health Disparities Research,
Contraception and Infertility Research,
Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds. NIH offers three intramural LRPs (for NIH employees doing research at NIH); each requires a two- or three-year service commitment:
General Research (3 years),
AIDS Research (2 years),
Clinical Research for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds (2 years)

Who Can Apply:
|
U.S. citizen or permanent resident with a doctoral degree (M.D., Ph.D., or equivalent; see Eligible Specialties section above) and educational loan debt equal to at least 20% of annual salary. An NIH grant is not required for participation in the NIH Loan Repayment Programs.
